Willie White and I have just returned from a meeting with Lord Mayor Cllr Emer Costello (Lab) at the Mansion House.
On behalf of the group we asked for her support in:
Retaining the arts spend at the current level of €601,000
Retaining the position of Arts Officer after the imminent retirement of the great Jack Gilligan
She agreed she would lobby on our behalf in favour of both these points and would discuss them further with her fellow Labour Councillors.
Further, she asked that a member of the Dublin Arts Workers movement contribute to a working group for The Lord Mayors Commission on Employment, which feeds into the city plan for 2011 -2016.
There was a wide-ranging one hour discussion that touched positively on the role of the arts and culture in the city, and there was a discussion about arts representation on the Creative Dublin project – which Willie knows more about than I do.
Further the Lord Mayor made the point that councillors are often simply unaware of events in the arts world as they are not informed, so please do your best to invite them and/or inform them about any events you have going on.
Next meeting, myself and Maria Fleming to meet Cllr Claire O’Reagan (Monday).
In the light of the above developments and in making sure we all have a voice in this, I’m more sure we should have another group meeting soonish – perhaps early October.
